Common to popular belief one should rather focus on keeping BOTH eyes on the ball. If one eye is not on the ball the golfer will lose depth perception. It is vital that your central vision is focussed on the ball much like eyeballing the shot. A common cause of yips in the swing is actually all started from golfers moving their eyes or allowing them to jump, this is called Optic Kinetic Reflex response. Your vision is the single most important thing in golf!!! When the chin is up i.e. Adam Scott you will lose sight of the ball and proprioception is lost! Can you believe that 15 things have to happen then for the eyes to refocus on the ball..

Myth No 2 - Maintain the same spine angle throughout the swing
The spine angle actually changes constantly throughout the swing. In order for the head (or the spot between the shoulder blades, whatever you use) to maintain the level it had at address, the spine has to bend laterally as it rotates. Try this (and be careful!). Take your address position with your head against the wall. Now, with your arms across your chest rotate your shoulders into the backswing. In order to maintain your spine angle, you have to contract your left obliques (the muscles hidden by the love handles. These are the muscles that bend the spine to the left side). Now rotate into the downswing until the chest faces the target. The obliques on the other side should contract. If you have a decent back, keep turning your body (you'll have to move your feet, but keep your head glued to the wall), until your shoulders are parallel to the target line, this time facing the opposite direction as you were at address. In order to hit this position while maintaining the spine angle, the back needs to be almost hyper extended.
What's my point in all this? Even if you disregard hip slide (which adds another element of spinal movement), the irony is that in order to maintain the forward bend angle of the spine to the ground, the spine itself is in constant motion. This is necessary because the spine isn't a straight rod, it's curved (even in guys like Adam Scott). This is why so many golfers have back problems. It's the nature of the beast. We weren't made to play golf !!

Myth No 3 - Width during the backswing is equivalent to distance
To dispel this myth we are going to look at how to conserve angular momentum in the golf swing. A simple way to look at this would be looking at how footballers now kick the ball further distances using a roundhouse motion instead of a straight line kicking action. Conservation of angular momentum allows athletes such as ice skaters, divers, and gymnasts to manipulate their rotation by altering their moment of inertia. For example, consider spinning ice skaters who pull in their arms. Since the ice is nearly frictionless, the angular momentum should stay constant during their spin. When they pull in their arms, the skaters concentrate their mass closer to the rotation axis, decreasing their moment of inertia. To keep the angular momentum constant, the angular velocity increases, resulting in a faster spin How does this relate to the swing. The further the mass is way from the axis of rotation in this case the body as a rotor the harder it is to control as well as slowing the rotational speed of the body down.. Keeping your hands inward on the circle will greatly enhance your ability to hit out on the ball as well as give you added time and distance to generate clubhead speed.

We will be doing an extensive clinic on all 3 of these myths on Friday 19 November at 5- 6 PM at the Benoni Country Club driving range. To book please contact the pro shop on 079 109 6498 for only R100/person.
